iThenticate Launches Enhanced Viewer to Quickly Highlight Matched Content and Attribution Errors

Leading plagiarism detection software refreshes how users view written work for originality; speeds up plagiarism checking process

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- iThenticate, the leading plagiarism detection and prevention technology for scholarly publishing, today announced the launch of a new report view for screening written work for plagiarism and duplication. The report view, called Document Viewer, enables users to view an uploaded submission in its original format, including images, tables and graphs. The Document Viewer framework streamlines and speeds up the plagiarism checking process, allowing users to view enhanced reporting to uncover unoriginal content and inaccurate citation, and make quicker assessments of the integrity of the work.

"Plagiarism is on the rise at the research and authorship level, causing longer lag times for editors from submission to publication as well as an increasing number of retractions," said Chris Cross , general manager of iThenticate. "The latest enhancements help writers quickly screen their own work and identify issues that need correcting; and offers editors a tool that expedites the editorial review process by simplifying how they view attribution or duplication issues."

A recent iThenticate survey of more than 400 researchers and editors at scholarly publications found that one in three editors encounters plagiarism "regularly," and that 60 percent of those surveyed believe instances of plagiarism are increasing in their field. According to Retraction Watch, the number of retractions in scholarly publications doubled between 2010 and 2011.

"Document Viewer is easy to work with and makes the checking process absolutely clear," said Paolo Martelletti , editor in chief of The Journal of Headache and Pain, published by Springer. "The tool is especially useful for editors who are facing new manuscripts from unfamiliar authors submitting impressive studies."

Document Viewer is currently in beta through March 2013. iThenticate users will be able to continue toggling between the previous version of the report view and the new Document Viewer beyond the beta period. Future enhancements will include additional enhanced reporting such as section exclusion and citation exclusion.
