Ivey Publishing Embraces iThenticate to Ensure Original Writing in its Business School Case Studies

Leading plagiarism checker checks business reports submitted to the publishing division of The Richard Ivey School of Business for originality prior to publication

OAKLAND, Calif., April 4, 2012 – Turnitin, creators of iThenticate and the leader in plagiarism prevention, has proved instrumental to Ivey Publishing, the publishing division of The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, in ensuring that all of their business case studies contain original writing. To ensure optimal quality of work, Ivey Publishing checks all submitted case studies against the iThenticate database of published content.

“At Ivey Publishing, we wanted a way to protect ourselves from any inadvertent use of materials that weren’t original,” said Sheryl Gregson, Manager of Business Systems at Ivey Publishing. “The use of iThenticate was a way for us to do that.”

With the rise in scholarly misconduct in recent years, publishers like Ivey Publishing are implementing technology and adjusting editorial processes to protect themselves from cases of plagiarism and other forms of misconduct. Ivey Publishing participates in CrossCheck, an initiative between CrossRef and iThenticate that is comprised of more than 280 leading publishers who share published works with the iThenticate database. This database enables publishers to check writing against more than 116 million content items, including 30 million scholarly articles, books and conference proceedings from more than 70,000 publications, and 20 billion web pages.

“Regardless of whether it is blatant plagiarism or unintentional absence of attribution, it is imperative that publishers establish effective systems to check for those issues to avoid costly retractions, law suits and other negative side effects that could harm an organization’s reputation,” said Chris Cross, general manager of iThenticate.
